Five of My Favorite Beginner Tarot Resources

If you have been thinking of learning tarot and you just aren’t sure where to start, below I will list some great suggestions of things to get you started.

  • Tarot Deck
    • Pricier: Modern Love Tarot
    • Less expensive: Light Seer’s Tarot
      • Why? These decks are both amazing and their artwork is based on the RWS system. It’s very easy to pick up the messages of the cards on either of these decks when you are first learning because the artwork is so expressive. The Modern Love Tarot by Ethony is a bit more expensive, but it’s an indy deck and the card stock is thick and it has several amazing special touches (like gold foil on the backs and gold edging on the deck). The cards are a great size, too. The Light Seer’s tarot is a great deck, too. It is a mass market deck so the price is lower but it will still hold up to pretty rigorous use. The cons are that the card stock is thinner and the edges of the deck is plain cut, but neither of those are really deal breakers.
  • Tarot Book: Kitchen Table Tarot by Melissa Cynova (Melissa’s book is on Scribd, along with a ton of other amazing Tarot books! You can get 60 days free if you sign up through my referral link here: https://www.scribd.com/g/8m6o5n)
    • Why? Melissa Cynova is amazing. She is funny, down-to-earth, and sassy. Reading this book feels like you are talking to a friend (or your cool aunt). She relates the cards to real life and real people. She also gives some great advice about reading tarot in general. I think that this is one of the best gateway books and introductions into tarot.
  • Free Video Series: Lisa Papez’s Tarot with Training Wheels
    • Why? This course has some great tips and ideas and it really fun, engaging, and easy to follow. I stumbled onto it recently and watched through it (because how can you not love the wonderful and bubbly Lisa?!). I felt immediately like I would recommend it to anyone who was interested in learning to read the tarot. Her entire channel is really great and one I would highly recommend.
  • Website and Phone App: Labyrinthos
    • Why? This app is not only incredibly useful, but it is also FREE. It has lessons to help you learn the cards, some great blogs that talk about different tarot ideas and principles, and, in my opinion, is one of the best resources out there for card meanings.
  • A Tarot Journal
    • Why? One of the most helpful things you can do is connect with each card personally. You can keep track of readings you do and reflect on them later, seeing how the reading played out. You can write down important things about each card as your knowledge of the tarot grows and you work with new decks that have different takes on the traditional meanings. These are wonderful to have to look back on and see how far you’ve come as a tarot reader, too!

That’s it for my list of my five favorite beginner resources! What resources do you love or use that I haven’t listed here? Leave them and your thoughts in the comments below.

Thanks for reading!
